Fun Fizzing Sidewalk Paint Activity for Kids

Sidewalk chalk is entertaining, as is painting, and making things fizz is also entertaining! Let's do them all!

This is a quick and easy recipe for sidewalk chalk "paint" made from food colouring, baking soda, and cornstarch.

We've made regular sidewalk chalk paint before, but this recipe is better because it fizzes when sprayed with vinegar.

What You'll Need to Make Fizzing Sidewalk Chalk Paint

  • A box of baking soda (we took an 8 oz box)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • Warm Water
  • Food colouring
  • Vinegar

Making Fizzing Sidewalk Paint

Step 1

Mix the dry ingredients first, then add the water and stir until it's not too thick. We probably used about a cup.

This paint dries quickly but easily washes away!

I adore the vibrant colours.

Step 2

Now comes the fun part!

Spray the paint with vinegar and wait for the fizz to appear.

Methods for Extending Learning Through Play

Discuss the chemical reaction between acids and bases. This is a fun way to incorporate chemistry into the lives of your preschoolers (or just enjoy the fizz).
